Name the moment that inspired you to take your career path. There are a few moments that guided me towards this profession due to the joy I found helping children find their voice. The moment that solidified my love for AAC was when an individual within my high school chose me to help him tell a joke. He was non-verbal and relied on a low-tech (pieces of paper) communication board to converse with classmates. I had never met him before but he chose me one day to help him tell a joke. I did not know what AAC was at the time, but he would point to the words and I would speak each one out loud. He was beaming ear-to-ear, while I read his joke and that was the moment I knew I had found my passion. Through AAC specialized to the child, they are given the opportunity to speak freely. Children are born with a unique sparkle and it is my job to ensure it continues to shine bright!
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?I am currently working on one of my greatest accomplishments, completing my clinical doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology from Northwestern University. My research focuses on the best practices surrounding the introduction and use of AAC within the pediatric population.
